He was a true karma Yogi, who believed in doing his work, expecting nothing in return.
He was born in 1889 in a village called Manur in Maharashtra. He was of medium height, fair complexioned and had an athletic body. His eyes, shaped like lotus petals shone brilliantly with spiritual light. Outwardly, he had a stern demeanour but at times could well be gentle and sweet natured.
In 1909, at a very young age, he visited all the holy places on the banks of the Narmada river. He then came to Alandi where he did Sadhana (penance) and studied the Gyaneshwari Geeta by Sant Gyaneshwar. He mastered the scripture and gained the blessings of the saints of that time who proclaimed him to have possessed true insight into the heart of Gyaneshwar.
After this he met with Shri Govind Maharaj who became his guru. His love for his guru was exceptional, as was Shri Govind Maharaj’s towards him.
Through Sadhana he was able to reach a spiritual stage where he was one with lord Shri Krishna. Not only did he perceive the lord himself but he was able to pass on this experience to his followers as well.
He was a great saint, and also a freedom fighter. He was involved in the struggle for independence from the British He used to say “This country is holy, trodden by saints and holy men over eons. Our motherland should be freed from these outsiders!”
He was also a literary man, and has authored many books on spiritual topics. In the year 1932, he called a spiritual conference in Songir. It was attended by all four Shankaracharyas and other saints and learned men who discussed religious and social issues.
He said that “The main purpose of a human birth was to realize God and that religion is the means to that end. By following its path, it teaches you love and compassion for your fellow beings and makes your mind pure and disciplined.
He took Samadhi in 1952 in Anandvan, Songir and the place was blessed with the love and blessings of yet another holy man, Shri Sadguru Keshavdutt Maharaj
